How to summarize an article without losing the point

PT Phrasera Team · 5 min read · June 2026

A good summary keeps the author’s main claim and the evidence that supports it — and drops everything else. The hard part isn’t shortening; it’s deciding what carries the meaning. Here’s a method that works whether you do it by hand or with a tool.

Read for the spine first

Before cutting anything, find the spine: the one sentence the whole piece is arguing. Then find the two or three points that hold it up. If you can state the spine in your own words, you understand the article well enough to summarize it.

Keep these, cut those

  • Keep: the main claim, key evidence, essential definitions, and the conclusion.
  • Cut: examples that merely repeat a point, asides, background everyone already knows, and stylistic flourishes.
  • Never invent: a summary must not add claims the source didn’t make. If it’s not in the original, it doesn’t belong.

Pick the right format

Different jobs need different shapes. Key sentences are great for study notes; a paragraph suits an abstract; bullet points work for a briefing. The summarizer lets you switch between all three and choose short, medium or long — handy when you’re summarizing the same source for different audiences.

Always check against the source

AI summaries are fast and usually capture the main points, but they can drop a crucial qualifier (“only,” “not,” “in some cases”) that flips the meaning. Read your summary next to the original and confirm the claims match. For anything high-stakes, that final human check is non-negotiable.

A tight summary respects your reader’s time — and proves you understood the material.
