How to write a makalah (academic paper) in Indonesian

PT Phrasera Team · 6 min read · June 2026

A makalah is a short academic paper assigned in Indonesian schools and universities — typically covering one topic in a clear introduction–discussion–conclusion structure. It’s shorter and simpler than a skripsi, but it’s graded on the same things: a clear topic, credible sources, and clean academic writing. Here’s how to write one well.

The standard structure

Most makalah follow a fixed shape:

  1. Cover (sampul) — title, your name, course, and institution.
  2. Kata pengantar (preface) — a short note of thanks and an overview.
  3. Daftar isi (table of contents).
  4. BAB I — Pendahuluan: latar belakang (background), rumusan masalah (problem statement), and tujuan (objectives).
  5. BAB II — Pembahasan: the main discussion, where you develop the topic with sources.
  6. BAB III — Penutup: kesimpulan (conclusion) and saran (suggestions).
  7. Daftar pustaka (bibliography).

1. Choose and narrow the topic

A focused topic is far easier to write well. Don’t try to cover an entire field in a few pages — pick one angle and develop it properly.

2. Write a clear pendahuluan

The latar belakang explains why the topic matters; the rumusan masalah states the questions you’ll answer; the tujuan says what the makalah aims to do. Keep them aligned — the questions should match the objectives.

3. Build the pembahasan with sources

This is the heart of the makalah. Support each point with evidence, and cite every source. When digesting a long reference, the summarizer gives you a fast first pass — then write it up in your own words and cite it with the citation generator.

4. Use sources honestly

Paraphrasing a source still requires a citation — see paraphrasing vs plagiarism. When you rephrase, the paraphraser (which works fully in Indonesian) helps you write it in your own voice, and you still credit the original.

5. Write clean, formal Indonesian

Makalah require baku words and correct affixes. Run your draft through the grammar checker to catch di- errors and nonstandard spellings, and the readability checker to keep dense paragraphs clear. See our EYD/PUEBI guide.

6. Finish with a real penutup

The kesimpulan answers your rumusan masalah directly; the saran offers practical recommendations. Don’t introduce new information here — just close the loop.

A makalah is manageable when you follow the structure: focused topic, clear pendahuluan, well-sourced pembahasan, honest citations, and clean Indonesian. Build it section by section and it comes together.
